Coherent leadership in times of dissonance Part I

Coherent leadership in times of dissonance

What is keeping leaders from truly being in their full potential? What is keeping you awake at night in your personal or business life? How do you lead and can you truly lead yourself and others when your life and business are in dissonance? What does it take to be a coherent leader in times of chaos and change? Are you the tree that stands strong when everyone and everything else is collapsing? And what does coherent leadership mean?

Coherence: When we are in a state of coherence our being, doing and response comes from a place of feeling centred, aware and present and our heart and brain work in alignment. When we are not coherent our stress levels are increased and our amygdala triggers a fight, flight or freeze reaction and action. We live in a state of constant survival and stress hormones are continuously released, which is having an effect on our health and well-being. In a coherent state we experience elevated...

Slow down to speed up

Over the past few weeks I have had this feeling I needed to slow down even more than I had already slowed down. There were moments when I asked myself: how much more do I need to slow down? I was reminded of a class from my Tamalpa Life Arts Training several years ago where we practiced to slow down our movements, more and more and even more. When we keep slowing down we suddenly shift awareness. Maybe time stands even still for a moment. We breath. We become aware of the stillness. It is magic.

Throughout those weeks I had this feeling that something new wants to emerge and in order for me to become aware of what wants to surface I have to slow down even more. I keep repeating "even more" because I had already slowed down so much and had wanted to speed up. Everyone else seems to start speeding up again or never slowed down in the first place despite recent lockdowns.

I experienced a few moments of restlessness and that was the sign that I needed to...

The creative potential of empty space

Recently, I received a message from a dear friend of mine. She wrote to me: "I am now in an empty space. I trust and explore what wants to unfold." She had applied for a job that she was interested in after her practice had to close due to COVID-19. The job application was not positive and she felt okay with that. She stayed with it. She didn't go into despair and frustration. She took the time to go for long walks, to sit in stillness, to be creative and open the space to whatever wants to present itself.

Empty Space holds so much potential. As leaders we need to create such empty spaces especially during times of uncertainty and disruption as this will assist us to stay calm, present and be creative and innovative.

I would like to take you on an exploration around the creative potential of empty space using a piece of plain white paper as a simple example. At the beginning, it is completely empty. It's just a white piece of paper. There's nothing on it. But if...

The power of one person

... and that one person is YOU!

Now is the time to show your true Being as a leader and human. Now is the time to lead from the heart and soul. There are moments when we lead from behind, there are moments when we lead being in the front and most importantly we can also lead through co-creation and collaboration with each other. Co-creative and collaborative leadership is the future. Now is the time to embrace the challenges of fear and face them head on. Now is the time to sit in stillness and breath and know that there is a day when the light will shine stronger and stronger again. Make it that day NOW.

There is no future and there is no past. There is only NOW. The choice is yours. How do you want to show up as a leader now? Not yesterday and not tomorrow but simply NOW.

We are currently going through an unprecedented global experience with the Corona Virus, at least in our life time. Some of us have already had similar experiences through war, job...

How NOT to raise your children

Synchronicity! I just saw this video on facebook where astrophysicist, author, and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how to raise kids that will become the shakers and movers of the world of tomorrow. He explains for example that a scientist is basically a child who kept his curiosity.

And just this morning I was looking at my son's picture. He was about 3 years old, St. Patrick's Day in Singapore, his eyes full of curiosity and an incredibly energy. Fast forward, a 14 year old who has already been through a lot of experiences. I did let my children jump into puddles, get dirty and roam freely yet my children's lives were not carefree. I will be sharing in my Simply Mpowering Families blog the many experiences that we have been through and how that impacted our family and the growth of my children as well as my own growth. Along the way I did a lot of different types of training including "mindful...

Future jobs require empathic skills and courage

"In the past, jobs were about muscles, now they are about brains, but in the future they will be about the heart." Minouche Shafik, director, London School of Economics, quoted in "dare to lead" by Brené Brown.

I am glad to see that I have been preparing thoroughly for the future :) Whether it is at the World Economic Forum, people in business or friends where ever I turn I see change and shifts and I hear people talking how our current systems or even schools are neither prepared nor preparing us or our children for the future.

Recently a friend told me about interviews at a bank. The expertise on the CV was not discussed as it was clear that the CV reflects the experience. What seems much more important now are the soft skills. Do people fit into teams and are they truly being a resource on multiple dimensions within the team? Have they got the right kind of communication skills? What is their focus in life and is self-development important to them? Do they have active...
