The magic of letting go - creating space for the new

How do you feel when you read or hear a sentence like "letting go of the old creates room for the new"? Maybe take a moment to sit with that question.

What is the first thought, picture or feeling that comes up? Maybe write it down or draw a picture and express whatever wants to be seen, heard or felt.

Just one (small) step leads to change and a new experience. Unless we let go of what we are familiar with and risk that one step forward into the unknown, we do not know what is around the corner.

Last year I came across a video of two siblings singing the song "The Prayer". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frv_hvC2dPY

Then the 3rd sibling joined as well. They are all STEM students. It was heartwarming to listen to their story and see where their journey was taking them step by step. From singing together at home during COVID, uploading their first YouTube videos, uploading Christmas songs on platforms such as iTunes and Spotify, setting up a Go fund me page to pay for licenses and moving to Patreon to continue the funding.

They had no idea where this journey would take them and just risked forward one step at a time.

There is certainly a willingness for more risk when we are younger. However, when we have been through many experiences in life or a deep healing journey we are also more willing to risk forward. We learnt on those journeys what is truly worth living for.

Once a month I meet up with a small group of wise women from different parts of the world. They are all coaches and our eldest member is 80 years old.

No matter how old we are, there is always space for new explorations and inquiry, risking forward into new experiences, learning from each other and sharing our insights.

Somehow I have the feeling that going forward, we might not be experiencing "one world" again. It almost seems impossible.

When I reflect on how I have lived in different places and experienced different political systems, I realize, how multi-faceted our world has already been before.

Can we trust that we all have our journeys? This seems so obvious but when we look at it on a deeper level, there are so many attempts to control other people's lives.

How could we possibly know what is best for others, even countries?

Can we let go of the old and create space for the new? Change is the only constant.

We can practise letting go by taking some deep breaths and with every exhale let go of tensions in our body. That simple.

We can't hold our breath forever, at least not while we are alive.

Freedivers can hold their breath for more than ten minutes but even they have to breathe in and out again upon surfacing from their deep dive.

Think about it. The amount of times we breathe in and out, a natural letting go.

So why is it so difficult for us to let go? There are often underlying fears with different root causes, depending on our childhood and life experiences.

I always loved the expression "if you can name it, you can tame it".

It can be a key to transformation to get to the bottom of what is causing unhealthy patterns or limiting belief systems.

Maybe we are feeling responsible for everyone else's well-being or we are holding on to the "inner critic" voice, which might belong to our parents.

Maybe we are holding on to people, who will never change because they lack the willingness for self-reflection or take responsibility for their behaviour, especially narcissists.

Could it be that we are giving away our power to please the world and make everybody else happy? What about our own happiness?

What is the worst thing that could happen if we let go? Do we need support with that process and if yes, what kind of support? One (small) step at a time...

What would you like to let go of?

Maybe do a spring clean and start with decluttering as this always creates space for the new. This could be in your home, at your office, in your inbox, your list of phone contacts, deleting apps, unsubscribing from mailing lists that you have lost resonance with, etc.

Observe, how all of those actions will create "space for the new".

Can you risk forward? Just one (small) step? Can you trust life, your gifts and your skill set? You might not even have "unearthed" all of them yet.

Letting go has been a very rewarding experience, although not always an easy one. Over time it becomes easier to let go of the old and create space for the new. Learning and growing.

Remember, many small steps lead to a mile and one small step can turn out to be a quantum leap.

Coming up next: The magic of simplicity. So, stay tuned...
